Message	your profile a little further. No, that's not right. Obviously you can't down shift at a high speed, but you definitely should be able to put in in first without coming to a complete stop. Are there any leaks and have you checked the fluid level just to be safe? It's probably more to do with your system needing to be bled, or the pedal not adjusted properly however it could also be the master cylinder, or clutch pressure plate on it's way out. You need to do a thorough check of the system.
